We are all speaking English but.... Instalment 1

Atkins: Baby, have you seen my stockings?
Rachel: Your what?!!!
Atkins: My stockings. I need them for work.
Rachel: For work???!!! [Atkins is a Police officer]
Atkins: Yes. What is strange about that? Oh, here they are. [Pulls out a pair of socks]
Rachel: Ohhhh. You call those stockings. We call those socks. Stockings are something different. Policemen don’t normally wear them. [Explanation follows.]
(At least I don’t think Policemen usually wear stockings. Does anyone know?)

For further clarification:
  •          Headsock = wooly hat/beanie
  •           Hat = cap
  •         Hangwire = coathanger

Happy New Year!

A classic Zambian Happy New Year text

Spontaneous baby sitting

I asked to hold Faith, the neighbour's gorgeous baby. One hour later she was still with me and wasn't too sure where her mum had gone. Now that's clever parenting!

The fruits of the colouring in enterprise

So great!!!!

Domestic bliss

This is how we do the dishes (Pezo is helping me)

And this is how you cook beans. We buy them dried then do this, because canned ones are super expensive. We cook them on the brazier (which is the only cooking device many people here have - we have an oven too thank goodness) because it takes ages on the stove, and electricity is expensive. This is cheaper.

Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Do they ever!!!!!
